The Summerland ceramic-sealed urns are all proudly handcrafted by Mick Hydes, a local artisan ceramic artist based in Ashburton.

From the Earth

Mick makes one-of-a-kind ceramic urns for the ‘From the Earth’ range. He is a local craftsman based in Ashburton and one of the founding members of the Hakatere Ceramics and Pottery club.

He’s an active committee member and served as the Club President for seven years. Today, as the kiln chief, he still teaches and runs classes, helping so many members create and put the finishing touches on their work every week.

About Mick Hydes

Mick started pottery in 2008 after being encouraged by both of his sisters. Mick started classes working under the well-known and highly regarded Ashburton potter and tutor, Bevan Stowell.

“The thing that hooked me was how you can manipulate a very plastic hunk of dirt and turn it into a beautiful thing that will last for centuries.“

Mick has a keen interest in craft glazes, which have evolved significantly in recent years. He loves how the effects of glaze layering can have transformational effects.

“When I look at pottery in collections or museums, I’m looking where the maker’s fingers would have been to create the piece, not how perfect it is.”
