About Us

Being a strong part of our local community means a lot to us, and family is everything.

Hi, we're Lorna and Duncan, the proud owners and operators of Summerland.

As a vet, Lorna is honoured to serve local families and has been supporting and caring for their beloved pets since 2010. She is passionate about holistic lifelong veterinary care, with a strong focus on preventative health, guiding families and their pets from the early days right through to their twilight years. Her compassionate approach and heartfelt support are especially valued when helping families navigate end-of-life care and say goodbye to their treasured companions.

Duncan is the chief operator of the cremation service and is often the friendly voice on the other end of the phone. His love of animals extends far beyond pets to all creatures in his care. As a farmer, he is closely connected to the land and the local community, and he is a well-known face in the New Zealand farming scene.

Together, we are parents to our daughter Isla, our elderly cat Nessie and Dorothy, our miniature Dachshund. Our family understands the emotional journey you are taking when it comes time to say goodbye to a pet.

We are committed to ensuring that your pet and your family get the very best professional service and care as you navigate your pet's final farewell.

What's in a name?

In certain ancient cultures, The Summerland is a peaceful and beautiful place where souls go to rest and rejuvenate, and await either reincarnation or to guide other souls.

Summerland is often portrayed as a land of eternal summer, with lush landscapes and breathtaking natural beauty.

We live in Mt Somers, Te Kiekie, a small town at the foot of the Southern Alps in Canterbury, known for its vast open spaces, iconic New Zealand scenery and untouched South Island beauty.

As a family, we feel intimately connected to the land through regenerative farming and intergenerational ties, sharing a deep, collective love for all the animal souls in our lives.
